Niepoort 'Drink Me' Douro Tinto 2020

As the name of this wine from revered wine maker/maverick/genius, Dirk Niepoort, suggests, this is a wine for, well, drinking... It is ultimately a Port, but made as a delicate, fresh table wine. The nose is floral, bright and fruity, with just the slightest touch of funk. Very seductive. In the mouth, the wine is just as attractive with plenty more crunchy red fruit and an elegant savouriness. There is a bright, zingy acidity and super fine, almost missable, tannins. This juice exudes happiness and drinkability - a real gem. It's fair to say that this wine is uncomplicated - it's not made to be complex - just delicious.

Founded in 1842, the small Port house of Niepoort is now run by 5th generation Dirk Niepoort. It's easy to forget that it was only a few years ago that Niepoort was only sought out by a small band of faithful followers, as stock of remarkable, artisanal wines built up in the cramped old Niepoort lodge in Rua Serpa Pinto in Vila Nova de Gaia. These days, with a formidable international reputation which spans all styles from aged tawny to vintage, and all points in between, demand threatens to outstrip supply. 

Dirk is widely credited with the production of the first outstanding table wines of the Douro region in Portugal in the 80's.
