Champagne Billecart-Salmon 'Sous Bois' NV
From one of the few remaining Champagne houses to be owned by the original founding family and established in 1818. This unique cuvee, entirely vinified in oak, is respectfully composed of the three champenois grape varieties. It totally masters the art of blending by renewing the ancestral spirit and savoir faire of the original Champagnes.
Domaine Christian Bellang & Fils Meursault, Burgundy, France 2022
Every cellar needs a Meursault (or two!). The Domaine has been in the family for generations, dating back to 1789. Made with Chardonnay, you can expect the classic Meursault richness with a balance of fruit and toasty oaks - we're talking buttered toast and poached apples. It has an exceptional length and will sit happily for another 10 years too!
Bodegas Perica 'Finca Valdelascarretas' Viñedo Singular Reserva, Rioja, Spain 2020
We were extremely excited to taste an illicit sample of this wine at the backend of 2023, and have been waiting patiently for it to land in the UK, for real. We have plenty of fans of Perica's wines, specifically their entry level 'Olagosa' Blanco. By comparison, this is a serious step up. This is Viura from a single vineyard, planted in 1975. The concentration and texture may well come from the old, established vines, but is likely helped by the long 36 month ageing process in new French oak barrels. It has also sat in bottle for 14 months.
Westcott Vineyards 'Butlers' Grant' Cabernet Franc, Niagara Escarpment, Canada 2020
A recent addition to the shelves at VG, Westcott's portfolio is impressive to say the least. Brimming with rich dark fruit, but lifted up by some sweet scents of cherries and blueberries, this is worth every penny. Lovely and fresh of the palate with back cherry, cocoa and a touch of peppery spice. The finish is amazingly long and spicy. Just wonderful with roasted lamb, mushroom risotto or, as we were treated to at last visit, a T-bone steak.
Domaine Billard Pere & Fils Pommard, Burgundy, France 2022
A red Burgundy in any wine cellar or collection is a must! From the Pommard appellation which is known for elegant pinot noirs, this wine is outstanding and a With dark fruits, fine tannins and a touch of oak to add character. The wine see oak for abut 15 months, allowing it to develop even more nuanced flavours over time.
Noon 'Reserve' Shiraz, Langhorne Creek, Australia 2017
Known for power and concentration, the Shiraz Reserve balances its bold 15% ABV with abundant fruit, a rounded texture, and superb structure. Aged for 18 months in oak, it’s a dense, full-bodied wine with unmistakable Aussie character, perfect to enjoy now or cellar for years.
