      Where it comes from

Albariño is native to Galicia in northwest Spain, where the cool Atlantic climate has shaped its crisp, elegant style for centuries. It reaches its finest expression in the Rías Baixas DO, where vineyards are often planted close to the coast and trained high on traditional granite pergolas to improve airflow in the region's humid conditions. Across the border in Portugal, the same grape is known as Alvarinho and is an important component of the country's celebrated Vinho Verde wines.

Where it thrives around the world

While Galicia remains Albariño's spiritual home, the variety has found success in other cool coastal regions around the world. Portugal continues to produce outstanding Alvarinho, while exciting examples also come from California, Oregon, Uruguay, New Zealand and Australia. Wherever it's grown, Albariño performs best in moderate maritime climates, where warm days are balanced by cool nights that help preserve its trademark freshness and aromatic lift.

      Climate and winemaking impact

Albariño naturally produces wines with bright acidity and expressive aromas of lemon, lime, white peach, apricot and citrus blossom, often accompanied by a distinctive saline, mineral edge that reflects its coastal origins. Cooler climates emphasise freshness and zesty citrus flavours, while slightly warmer sites bring riper stone fruit without sacrificing balance. Most Albariño is fermented in stainless steel to preserve its purity and vibrant fruit, although some producers use lees ageing or large neutral oak vessels to add texture and complexity. The result is a beautifully balanced white that's equally at home as an aperitif or alongside seafood, tapas and fresh summer dishes.
