What Makes Greek Wine So Special?

Greece is renowned for its indigenous grape varieties, many of which are found nowhere else in the world. Crisp, mineral-driven Assyrtiko has become an international favourite, while Moschofilero offers fragrant, aromatic whites. On the red side, Xinomavro produces elegant, age-worthy wines, while Agiorgitiko is loved for its ripe fruit and smooth texture.

These native varieties give Greek wines a real sense of place and individuality. While international grapes are grown in some areas, it's Greece's own grapes that make the country's wines so distinctive and rewarding to explore.

Climate & Winemaking

Greece enjoys a warm Mediterranean climate, but altitude, coastal breezes and island vineyards help preserve freshness and acidity. Many vineyards are planted on steep hillsides or in poor, rocky soils, naturally limiting yields and producing concentrated, expressive wines. On Santorini, vines are famously trained into low basket shapes to protect them from strong winds and intense sunshine.

Modern Greek winemaking has evolved rapidly over the past few decades. Producers have invested heavily in quality, combining traditional knowledge with modern techniques to showcase their native grapes at their very best.
