Les 'Gras Moutons' (fat sheep) is a wonderful name for a vineyard and for a wine. We're not sure if it was the winemakers intention, but you could argue that the wine has a touch of lanolin like character, adding to the wines gorgeous texture - not a characteristic we usually associate with Muscadet. More obvious however are the lovely citrus notes of lemon and grapefruit on the nose, which are backed with brined olives, smoke and biscuit. The palate is full bodied but with a lovely tangy fresh acidity and a beautiful minerality - more common of Melon de Bourgogne from Muscadet in the Loire Valley. The balance here between pleasant bitterness and roundness is perfect and the finish is just superb. Not dissimilar to outstanding Chablis and has legs to age beautifully for a few years yet. Outstanding value for a wine of such complexity. Enjoy with Oysters or Mussels. Thank us later.
Domaine la Haut Fevrie is one of the leading producers in Muscadet Sever et Maine. Working both organically and biodynamically they look to produce wines that are pure to their origins and absorb the soil which gives them life. Working vineyards in prized areas, in a region where exposure to the sun is critical, they craft some of the best value wines on the planet.
"I look to bottle up a pure expression of the marriage between vine, soil and the elements of geography and weather I have to work with. The region of Muscadet has its challenges but that only inspires me to make the very best wines I can, in a natural and environmentally friendly way." - Sebastien Branger, Winemaker.
