Why Barbaresco isn't held in the same high regard as it's neighbouring appellation, Barolo, is beyond me. The wines share much of the same character but Barbaresco typically produces softer, more elegant wines that are approachable in their youth.
Povero's 'Batu' Barbaresco is a brilliant example. Intense and spicy on the nose with lots of dark fruits then a complex blend of plums, tobacco and vanilla. Elegant and approachable immediately, thanks to 24 months aged in oak before release, but will certainly continue to improve for a few years if you can wait.
