Poggio al Tesoro 'Mediterra' 2022

"Super Tuscan" sounds a bit provocative, but my gosh this wine lives up to the name (an anglicised, unofficial term for high-quality Tuscan wines made outside the DOC regulations i.e. usually with Bordeaux grape varieties). This is super indeed: super fragrant and super fruity. Laden with blackberry and red cherry flavours, intertwined with hints of orange peel and typical Mediterranean scrub. Soft and velvety on the palate with lovely sweet toasty notes. Highly drinkable. Do it justice by grilling an obnoxiously large rib-eye and share with friends on the patio.

Poggio al Tesoro was established in 2002 by Marilisa Allegrini and her late brother Walter, who came to Bolgheri from Valpolicella in 2001 in search of a new viticultural adventure. After extensive exploration in other regions, they had been drawn to the diversity of soils and the quality potential of Bolgheri’s coastal sites. Their first purchases included vineyards along the Strada delle Sondraie and sites on the Strada Bolgherese, where plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot were already established. Further acquisitions from neighbouring growers soon formed what is now Poggio al Tesoro. Today, the estates philosophy is routed in sustainability.
