Castello di Meleto Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2021

The Riserva steps things up a notch. Deeper, darker and more structured than the Classico, this is Sangiovese with a bit more muscle. Ripe black cherry, plum and dried cranberry lead the charge, layered with tobacco, sweet spice and a touch of cedar from time in oak. The tannins are firmer but polished, and there’s that classic Chianti acidity running through it, keeping everything fresh and precise rather than heavy.

This is one for proper food. Think slow-cooked beef shin ragù or rosemary-laced lamb. It’s also excellent with aged Pecorino or anything rich and savoury that needs a wine with backbone to match.

Castello di Meleto sits in the heart of Gaiole in Chianti, one of the highest and coolest parts of the Classico zone. The estate dates back to the 13th century, and today the focus is on sustainable vineyard work and letting Sangiovese speak clearly of its terroir. The Riserva comes from carefully selected fruit and sees extended ageing, resulting in a wine that balances tradition, structure and polish in equal measure.
