This is Puligny-Montrachet in all but name and price. From a small five-hectare plot of vines (historically an orchard) located within the walls of the castle of Puligny-Montrachet that have been farmed biodynamically since 2005. In Puligny fashion, the nose is full of juicy citrus, white stone fruit and lemon rind and the classically racy acidity and a touch of spice helps lift the ripe stone and orchard fruit flavours on the palate. A gorgeous, classic wine that wildly outperforms its class of generic Bourgogne Blanc.
Press Review:
Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy: "Pale lemon and lime. A nose of exquisite finesse, gorgeous quality of fruit which is lifted, stylish yet mouth-filling and very long. A clear step up from the already fine regular Bourgogne Chardonnay".
Domaine de Montille is one of the most historic estates in Volnay, dating all the way back to 1730, and one of the finest domaines in all of Burgundy. Now under the control of the 9th generation of the family, the estate has grown substantially in size with siblings Etienne and Alix de Montille at the helm. One of the most notable acquisitions in recent years is the purchase of Château de Puligny-Montrachet in 2012, which was managed under Etienne alone until 2017, when the government decreed that any estate bearing an appellation name could no longer produce and sell wine from outside of that appellation. As a result, the Chateau and it's production was absorbed into the De Montille portfolio, increasing their enviable holdings of impressive vineyards across the Côte d'Or. The De Montille family appointed American winemaker Brian Sieve as the Chef de Cave and transformed the estate to work under organic and biodynamic principles in the early 21st century.
