About The Producer
Matawhero is a pioneering Gisborne winery whose history reaches back to Bill and Denis Irwin in the 1970s. Its Single Vineyard Chardonnay comes from the Tietjen vineyard in the Hexton Hills, where clay over limestone provides fine Chardonnay-growing conditions.
Winemaking Information
100% Mendoza-clone Chardonnay from Tietjen vineyard in Gisborne's Hexton Hills. Night-picked fruit was gently pressed and cold settled, then fermented with indigenous yeasts. Malolactic fermentation lends richness and creamy texture. Vintage-specific 2022 listings give 13.2% ABV; precise oak maturation was not confirmed.
