Why You'll Love It
Old-vine Gamay with rather more substance and detail than everyday Beaujolais. Red berries and violets lead into a distinctly stony, peppery finish, supported by bright acidity and finely grained tannins. A brilliant choice for roast poultry, charcuterie or mushroom dishes.
About The Producer
Julien Duport is a small grower in the heart of Beaujolais whose roots in the region run deep. Although his parents did not make wine, his uncle, grandfather and great-grandfather all did, and he took responsibility for family parcels in 2003, following the collapse of the bulk grape market. His holdings include extraordinarily old bush vines, some planted in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Working on the steep, rocky slopes of Côte de Brouilly and Brouilly, he favours careful hand harvesting, traditional whole-bunch and semi-carbonic fermentations and sensitive ageing. La Boucheratte is a particularly compelling expression of Gamay from the blue volcanic stone of Côte de Brouilly, marrying vibrant fruit with the sort of savoury definition that rewards a few years in bottle.
Winemaking Information
La Boucheratte comes from a small parcel on the steep, west-facing blue-stone slopes of Côte de Brouilly, planted with old Gamay vines. Julien Duport favours hand harvesting and traditional Beaujolais fermentation, using whole bunches and a semi-carbonic approach, followed by restrained maturation in seasoned vessels. The precise duration of maceration and barrel ageing for the 2021 vintage has not been independently verified; figures for the 2022 release have deliberately not been transferred.
