South Africa has become one of the most exciting places in the world for Chenin Blanc, and this is a doozy. Picquet comes from a single vineyard that François Haasbroek considers one of the finest sites he's ever worked with, and it shows in the glass.

Ripe pear, quince and citrus fruit here, but this isn't a fruit bomb. Instead, it's all about luscious texture, savoury complexity and a lovely mineral edge. Time in old oak adds depth and weight without adding obvious oak flavours. Liquid gold in the glass.

If you love white Burgundy, serious Loire Chenin, this is going to be right up your street. Brilliant with roast chicken, grilled fish or a wedge of Comté.
About The Producer
Blackwater is the personal project of winemaker François Haasbroek, one of South Africa's most respected small-scale producers. Having worked around the world before returning to the Cape, François built Blackwater around a simple philosophy: seek out exceptional vineyards, intervene as little as possible, and let the site do the talking. Rather than following trends, he has become known for championing overlooked grape varieties and old vineyards, producing wines that are distinctive, characterful and unmistakably South African. Omerta has become something of a cult wine, named after the code of silence because François originally refused to reveal where the fruit came from for fear another winemaker would snap up the vineyard.
Winemaking Information
Picquet comes from a single dry-farmed vineyard on the slopes of Piketberg in Swartland, planted in the late 1980s on iron-rich coffee stone soils. The grapes are harvested by hand and whole-bunch pressed before fermenting naturally in old French oak barrels with no additions. The wine spends around 13 months ageing in barrel before being bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal sulphur. The result is a Chenin Blanc that combines texture, concentration and remarkable freshness.
