Why You'll Love It
Most people know Palomino as the grape behind Sherry, but Palomino was once a workhorse grape of the South Africa, planted for the production of brandy. Today only a handful of old vineyards remain and it has become one of South Africa's rarest old-vine treasures. This special vineyard was planted in 1926, the same year that Hitchcock released "The Pleasure Garden".
There's a lovely savoury quality running through the wine, alongside notes of lemon peel, green apple, almond and sea spray. The palate is rich and mouthwatering, with a salty mineral edge that makes it incredibly moreish. If you enjoy Albariño, Muscadet, fine Fino Sherry, this is well worth exploring.
An excellent pairing with Japanese cuisine.

About The Producer
Blackwater is the personal project of winemaker François Haasbroek, one of South Africa's most respected small-scale producers. Having worked around the world before returning to the Cape, François built Blackwater around a simple philosophy: seek out exceptional vineyards, intervene as little as possible, and let the site do the talking. Rather than following trends, he has become known for championing overlooked grape varieties and old vineyards, producing wines that are distinctive, characterful and unmistakably South African. Omerta has become something of a cult wine, named after the code of silence because François originally refused to reveal where the fruit came from for fear another winemaker would snap up the vineyard.
Winemaking Information
Pleasure Garden is made from a small parcel of dry-farmed Palomino grown in the Western Cape. The grapes are hand-harvested and whole-bunch pressed before fermenting naturally with indigenous yeasts. Fermentation and maturation take place in old oak barrels, allowing the wine to develop texture and complexity without picking up overt oak flavours. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal sulphur, preserving its purity, texture and distinctive sense of place.
