About The Producer
Greywacke was founded in 2009 by Kevin Judd, one of the central figures in Marlborough's rise to international prominence. As the founding winemaker at Cloudy Bay, he helped establish the region's reputation before setting out on his own, naming the new venture after the rounded greywacke stones found in its vineyards. Greywacke works with carefully selected sites across the Wairau and Southern Valleys, combining disciplined fruit selection with a thoughtful, less interventionist approach in the cellar. Wild Sauvignon is perhaps its most distinctive wine, demonstrating that Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc can possess complexity, texture and considerable ageing potential.
Winemaking Information
The 2016 Wild Sauvignon comes from selected sites in the Southern Valleys and Wairau Plains. Fruit was gently pressed and the juice fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in mostly old French oak barrels; fermentation extended for more than six months. Roughly two-thirds underwent malolactic fermentation and the wine spent further time on lees before bottling in November 2017. The winery's 2016 release sheet confirms 14% ABV.
