About The Producer
Ben Walgate was a founding force behind Tillingham in East Sussex, one of the estates that helped introduce regenerative farming and low-intervention winemaking to a broader English audience. With Walgate Wines he has developed a more personal project, working with carefully selected fruit and exploring how England's diverse soils can shape expressive, serious wines. His methods favour natural fermentation, sensible use of oak and a close attention to farming practices. Rather than pursuing a single house style, Walgate's wines are deliberately individual, combining bright English acidity with texture, savoury complexity and considerable personality.
Winemaking Information
Walgate Chardonnay 2022 is 100% Chardonnay from two clay-soil vineyard sites, one farmed biodynamically and the other conventionally. Whole bunches were pressed and fermented in a combination of stainless steel and oak barrels of differing sizes and ages. The producer's 2022 technical sheet lists 12% ABV, 6.5 g/L total acidity and 70 mg/L total sulphur dioxide, with 3,283 standard bottles and 184 magnums produced. Vegan and vegetarian suitability is confirmed. Decanting and service around 12°C are recommended.
