Why You'll Love It
Areni Noir is one of those native grapes worth seeking out. This is delicate rather than heavy, with fragrant red fruit, savoury herbs and a lively, persistent finish. The extraordinary altitude and traditional clay-vessel ageing give it real individuality, especially alongside lamb or earthy vegetable dishes.
About The Producer
Zorah is one of the estates that has helped restore Armenia's reputation as a serious wine-producing country. Founder Zorik Gharibian, born in Iran to an Armenian family and later based in Italy, first visited Armenia in 1998 and began working with his wife Yeraz to revive its extraordinary grape-growing heritage. Their vineyards near Rind in Vayots Dzor sit around 1,400–1,600 metres above sea level, on stony limestone soils framed by high mountains. Native Areni Noir grows on its own roots, free from the impact of phylloxera, and is fermented with indigenous yeasts. Ageing in traditional buried clay vessels, known as karasi, connects these elegant, fresh wines to one of the world's oldest winemaking cultures.
Winemaking Information
The 2023 Karasì comes from ungrafted Areni Noir vines around Rind in Vayots Dzor, at roughly 1,400–1,600 metres. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled concrete tanks. The wine then matures for approximately 12 months in large traditional karasi clay amphorae buried in the earth, followed by another six months in bottle. The published 2023 specification confirms 13.5% ABV.
