Why You'll Love It
Cornas can be formidable, but Stéphane Robert gives its powerful Syrah a beautiful balance of dark fruit, spice and mineral freshness. The 2020 is structured enough to cellar, yet the tannins are polished and inviting. Excellent alongside duck, beef or rich mushroom dishes.
About The Producer
Stéphane Robert founded Domaine du Tunnel in 1994, starting with rented vines while still in his twenties. Together with his wife Sandrine, he has built one of the northern Rhône's most distinctive small estates, farming parcels in Cornas, Saint-Péray and Saint-Joseph. The name refers to the disused steam-train tunnel in Saint-Péray that he converted into a remarkable barrel cellar. Stéphane is admired for wines of concentrated fruit and exceptional finesse, with careful attention to the character of each parcel and restrained oak handling. His Saint-Péray shows how compelling the Rhône's white varieties can be.
Winemaking Information
The 2020 Cornas combines Syrah from approximately 15 steep granite hillside parcels, with vines averaging around 50 years old. The fruit was hand-picked, 90% destemmed and fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel for around three weeks. After fermentation the wine matured for 14 months in four-year-old 228-litre oak barrels, preserving its dark-fruit and peppery character. The 2020 published specification lists 13.5% ABV and 1 g/L residual sugar.
