Why You'll Love It
Since all the growers of Albariño got together and collectively decided to charge more for their grapes, we have been seeking a super well-sub-20 Albariño. We've found it in El Camarón (which is Spanish for shrimp). This has all of the zing and crispness one expects, with flavours of lemon and lime, nutmeg spice and a lovely tangy, saline zip. The palate is light and fresh with flavours of nectarine and a lovely stoniness. With a name like El Camarón, you shouldn't need me to tell you that this works wonders with shellfish.
About The Producer
El Camarón is made in partnership with a small winery in Val do Salnés, the historic coastal heartland of Albariño. The fruit comes entirely from estate vineyards situated within eight kilometres of the winery, many overlooking the Ría de Arousa. Atlantic air brings freshness and a distinctly salty character, while the granite soils help give the wine its mineral backbone. El Camarón means “the shrimp”, hence the wonderfully distinctive label and the wine’s natural affinity with seafood.
Winemaking Information
The grapes come from pergola-trained vineyards in Val do Salnés, close to the Atlantic and rooted in free-draining granite soils. After sorting and gentle pressing, the cooled must spends a few hours on its skins before moving by gravity into stainless-steel tanks. Fermentation takes around four weeks using indigenous yeasts, followed by two weeks on the lees with regular stirring for added texture. The wine is unfined, lightly filtered and sees no oak.
