About The Producer
Res Fortes is the Roussillon project of winemaker Moritz Bak, whose fascination with wine began during childhood summers in southern France. After studying at Plumpton College, he worked harvests across Europe, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and the United States, before making his first Res Fortes vintage in 2014. In 2018 he purchased an organically farmed 14-hectare estate near Maury in the foothills of the Pyrenees. Here, old bush vines cling to steep, schist-rich hillsides, where strong Mediterranean sunshine is balanced by altitude, wind and cooler nights. Moritz brings an international outlook to these traditional vineyards, favouring expressive fruit and freshness over excessive extraction. The range spans lively rosé and Merlot, a classic Grenache-Mourvèdre-Syrah blend and the remarkable Brave, sourced from 120-year-old Grenache vines on a steep north-facing slope. Res Fortes makes a compelling case for Roussillon as one of France's most exciting regions.
Winemaking Information
Merlot Madness 2022 is made from 100% Merlot grown in a small organic vineyard acquired by Res Fortes in 2018. The emphasis is on bright, youthful fruit, soft tannins and immediate approachability, rather than a heavily oaked style. The existing Shopify ABV is 13.5%; external listings differ, so this should be checked against the physical bottle.
