About The Producer
Avignonesi is one of Tuscany's most respected estates and the largest biodynamically certified winery in Italy. Since Virginie Saverys took ownership in 2009, the estate has undergone a remarkable transformation, embracing organic and biodynamic farming, native yeast fermentations and a deep commitment to biodiversity and sustainability. While best known for world-class Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, the estate's Desiderio has become one of Italy's benchmark Merlots, proving that Tuscany can produce wines every bit as compelling as the great Right Bank reds of Bordeaux.
Winemaking Information
Desiderio comes from a single vineyard in the Cortona hills, where clay-rich soils and a warm Tuscan climate allow Merlot to reach exceptional ripeness while retaining freshness. The grapes are harvested by hand before spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts and a long maceration to build depth and structure. The wine is then matured for around 18 months in French oak barriques, followed by bottle ageing before release. Certified organic, biodynamic and vegan, every step of the process is designed to express the vineyard with as little intervention as possible.
