About The Producer
Winemaker James Kellie arrived in Western Australia’s remote Great Southern region in 1998, intending it to be little more than a stopping point on his way to Tasmania. Captivated by the landscape and the extraordinary diversity of its vineyards, he never completed the journey.
James initially made Harewood Estate’s wines under contract before purchasing the property with his wife, Careena, in 2003. Together they built a new winery among the rolling hills outside Denmark, close to Australia’s wild southern coastline, and set about creating an estate that could express the Great Southern as a whole.
Harewood draws upon carefully chosen vineyards across Denmark, Porongurup, Mount Barker and Frankland River. Each has its own combination of altitude, soil and maritime influence, from the cool, forested slopes around Denmark to the sunlit inland valleys further north. This breadth has become central to Harewood’s identity, allowing James to explore the subtle differences within one of Australia’s largest and most captivating wine regions. Still family-owned, the estate remains a thoughtful and deeply personal celebration of the place that persuaded him to stay.
