Why You'll Love It
In 1987, Avignonesi was the first in Tuscany to produce a barrel-aged white wine, with grapes cultivated in Cortona’s foothills. Today the wine continues to be a trend leader - one of Tuscany's most iconic Chardonnays - with its vinification in a concrete egg, a terracotta jar and oak barrels.
Rich, soft and elegant, it owes its name to a stone lion, symbol of wisdom and strength, which can be found in front of Palazzo Avignonesi in Montepulciano.
Flavours here are layers of citrus, white flowers, ripe orchard fruit and subtle spice. The biodynamicly farmed vineyards give the wine remarkable purity and energy. Luxurious without feeling heavy, making it equally enjoyable with food or savoured on its own.
To make an occasion of this gorgeous wine, spatchcock a chicken and roast it over fire, whilst lathering with butter and herbs. Serve with rustic, roast potatoes and a simply dressed salad. Heaven.

About The Producer
Founded in Montepulciano in the early 1970s, Avignonesi has become one of Tuscany's benchmark estates under the ownership of Virginie Saverys. Following a complete conversion to organic and biodynamic farming, the estate is now recognised as one of Italy's largest biodynamic wineries. Every decision in the vineyard and cellar is guided by a desire to express place rather than winemaking technique, using native yeasts and gentle handling wherever possible. While Avignonesi is best known for its outstanding Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, wines such as Il Marzocco demonstrate the estate's pioneering spirit and its ability to reinterpret classic Tuscan varieties with elegance and authenticity.
Winemaking Information
95% Chardonnay (and 5% Petit Manseng) sourced from organically and biodynamically farmed vineyards in Cortona, where clay-rich soils over limestone provide freshness and mineral character. After a short skin contact, the wine ferments with indigenous yeasts before ageing for around five months across French oak barrels, concrete egg and terracotta amphora. This combination builds texture and complexity while preserving vibrant fruit and precision.
