About The Producer
Château d’Yquem crowns the highest hill in Sauternes, looking out across a sea of vines towards the valleys of the Ciron and Garonne. Here, misty autumn mornings give way to warm, clear afternoons, creating the rare conditions in which noble rot can slowly transform the grapes upon the vine.
The estate’s recorded history begins in 1593, when Jacques de Sauvage acquired the property from the French crown. It passed to the Lur-Saluces family through marriage in 1785 and was subsequently guided by the widowed Françoise-Joséphine de Sauvage d’Yquem, whose determination helped establish its international reputation. The family remained its custodian for more than two centuries.
In the Bordeaux Classification of 1855, Yquem was placed alone as the only Premier Cru Supérieur, a distinction no other Sauternes estate has ever shared. Its reputation rests upon an almost uncompromising patience, with harvesters passing repeatedly through the vineyard to select individual grapes at precisely the right moment. Some years, when nature fails to provide what is required, no Château d’Yquem is released at all. Under the ownership of LVMH since 1999, the estate continues to preserve this remarkable union of landscape, time and human judgement.
