About The Producer
Château Palmer rises above the gravel terraces of Margaux, its pale stone façade and four slender turrets surrounded by vineyards stretching towards the Gironde estuary. Once known as the Domaine de Gascq, the property was already highly regarded in the 18th century, with its wines reportedly served at the court of Versailles.
The estate took its present name from Major General Charles Palmer, a British officer who purchased it in 1814 and devoted considerable energy to expanding both its vineyards and reputation. The imposing château was added by the Péreire brothers in the 1850s, around the time Palmer was named a Third Growth in the Bordeaux Classification of 1855. Its reputation, however, has long transcended that ranking.
In 1938, four Bordeaux merchant families joined together to rescue the estate from a period of uncertainty. The descendants of the Sichel and Mähler-Besse families remain its custodians today. Since arriving in 2004, director Thomas Duroux has guided Palmer towards biodynamic farming, restoring life and balance to its mosaic of historic vineyard parcels. The result is an estate that honours the grandeur of its past while remaining unusually thoughtful, inquisitive and alive.
